Here are South Africa’s most popular days for people to go to work

A study has revealed that Tuesdays and Wednesdays are the most popular days for driving to work.

Discovery Insure’s latest Work From Home Index shows that people are physically travelling between work and home an average of three days per week.

According to the study, during the past two years, people’s movement patterns between work and home have shifted.

“Our analytics team has watched with keen interest as people changed their movement patterns during Covid-19 in line with the peaks and dips of the infectious waves we experienced,” says Discovery Insure chief executive, Anton Ossip.

Anton says as an insurer seeking to protect their clients from risk, it is important to understand how risks are changing or emerging over time and how those risks affect their clients. He says during the hard lockdown people were mostly based at home.

“In terms of patterns observed more recently from our data, the Work From Home Index reveals a newfound sense of ‘freedom’ so far this year,” says Ossip. “People are now able to choose where and when they go into work in the instances of highly infectious waves of Covid-19 being recorded,” says Anton.

He says the number of days on which people go to work varies as follows:

  • The average number of days people are going into the office is three days per week.
  • The proportion of people going into the office three or more days in a week is 10 percent less than pre-Covid-19 levels.

The proportion of people going into the office every day during the week is 20 percent less than pre-Covid-19 levels.

The most popular days for travelling to work appear to be Tuesdays and Wednesdays. The least favoured day is a Friday, with around 20 percent fewer trips recorded on the day, says Anton.
