Jeanett Modise appointed to top HR job at Sanlam Group

Jeanett is also a member of CHRO South Africa's advisory board.

With effect from 1 July 2019, Jeanett Modise will take up the position of Chief Executive Human Resources (HR) and will be a member of Sanlam Group's Exco. Currently the CHRO at Sanlam Investment Group (SIG), Jeanett is an accomplished HR executive and a member of CHRO South Africa’s advisory board. She joined the Sanlam Group in 2014 as Executive: HR and Transformation at Santam where she spent three years before taking up her current position at SIG. She has an established record in other blue chip and multinationals such as SAP, Hewlett Packard, Nedbank and AngloGold Ashanti, where she was before joining the Group.

Among other qualifications, she holds a Master's degree in Business Leadership and a B.Com (Business Management) from the University of South Africa. She has also attended Senior Executive and Advanced Management Development for Senior Executives programmes at Harvard Business School and Insead Business School respectively.

Giving her thoughts on effective leadership, Jeanett says that successful leaders do not necessarily stand out for making great decisions all the time; rather, they stand out for being more decisive.

She says:

“They make decisions earlier, faster, and with greater conviction. They do so consistently and they consider the potential impact if they get it wrong - even amid ambiguity, with incomplete information, and in unfamiliar domains.”

“They realise that a wrong decision may be better than no decision at all and that that they cannot always wait for perfect information. However, they work actively to solicit input. These leaders also know when not to decide and they consider the impact if they do not make the decision. This inspires their team members to trust their own judgment on operational decisions. When a decision has been made, such leaders press ahead without doubt.”
