Mediclinic Southern Africa calls for volunteers

Mediclinic Southern Africa is looking for volunteers to ease the burden of its overwhelmed staff.

As a result of increased demand on medical facilities brought on by the Covid-19 pandemic, the Mediclinic hospital group is in need of people with skills ranging from clinical to administrative who can volunteer their time and expertise.

Having had a positive experience with volunteers at its Vergelegen Hospital in Somerset West, MediClinic officials decided to roll out this effort to its other medical centres.

Mediclinic’s Dr Amelia Brink said volunteers would be given clear directions on their role and responsibilities, saying, “We had asked for psychologists and registered counsellors to please volunteer their time and sit in the tea rooms and identify the staff that are in dire need of help and to talk it through. The response we’ve had has been overwhelming.”

South Africa is battling a second Covid-19 surge, with more than 34,000 deaths recorded as of 12 January 2021.
