Many of the companies that achieved the South African Certification have HR leaders that are members of the CHRO SA community.

The Top Employers Institute, a global organisation dedicated to enriching the world of work, has published the ranking of the top employers in South Africa for 2019. Many of the companies that achieved the South African Certification have HR leaders that are members of the CHRO SA community, including Dimension Data (Michaela Voller), Cell C Limited (Juliet Mhango), Mondelez International (Celiwe Xulu), Vodacom Group (Matimba Mbungela), and Unilever South Africa (Mechel Chetty). The overall top company in the country in 2019 is Nestlé South Africa, followed by Accenture, Microsoft, EY South Africa and Unilever rounding out the top 5.

The annual international research undertaken by the Top Employers Institute recognises employers that provide excellent employee conditions, nurture and develop talent throughout all levels of the organisation, and which strive to continuously optimise employment practices.

As an independent HR certification company, the Top Employers Institute assesses participants through their global HR Best Practices Survey. In order to be certified, organisations must successfully achieve the required minimum standard as set out by the Top Employers Institute. The Top Employers Institute Programme provides certified organisations with the ability to leverage their employer branding, benchmark their practices against other top performers and globally align their policies.

This year, of the 209 organisations in Africa officially registered to participate in the Certification Programme, 195 organisations spanning 31 African countries and 23 industry sectors achieved the Top Employers 2019 Certification. Of those, 99 organisations will carry the South African Certification

Billy Elliott, Top Employers Institute country manager for Africa, says that the Certification provides employers with an important quality metric that enables them to position their brands more effectively in the attraction, retention and engagement of top talent. “The Top Employers Institute is not just about certifying Africa’s Top Employers. We have seen a progression of HR in Africa over the last few years and it is our role to empower and advance people strategies across the world. We are driven not just to certify but to benchmark and connect outstanding employers around the world,” he said.

The HR Best Practice Survey encompasses over 100 questions which cover 600 ‘People Development’ practices across 10 topics: Talent Strategy, Workforce Planning, Talent Acquisition, On-boarding, Learning & Development, Performance Management, Leadership Development, Career & Succession Management, Compensation & Benefits and Culture. The Top Employers Institute evaluates the implementation of these HR practices and reviews how they are supported through Strategy, Ownership, Practices, Measurement and Technology.

CEO David Plink says that “We believe that the 2019 Certified organisations demonstrate exceptional employee conditions and encourage the development of these practices by putting their people first. These companies help enrich the world of work with their outstanding dedication to HR excellence and because of this, they are recognised as an employer of choice."
