Mpho Nkoane has been appointed as the group head of human capital at Fundi effective from 1 January 2022. Mpho will be reporting directly to the CEO, overseeing and heading up the HR function for the group.

In his current role, Mpho is the head of HR at FirstRand, in charge of a division called MotoVantage.

He shares that his journey at FirstRand was amazing. “I have had a great career journey within the group, which came with a lot of exposure and opportunities. I joined FirstRand in 2014, in FNB Home Loans, looking after various regions as a regional HR business partner.

“FirstRand has contributed a lot to my career growth. I was given so many opportunities to further my studies and one of my biggest highlights was being promoted to the head of HR in 2017 to start an HR function for a new division called MotoVantage.

Mpho shares that the opportunity came with great challenges and a lot of lessons from a career perspective. “I had to build HR from scratch, map out HR processes, build the HR team and ensure that HR policies and procedures were in place. There was no blueprint, and at the same time I had to look after payroll for a couple of months before it moved over into finance.

“This is where my leadership capabilities were tested. I showed up and gave it my all and was successful in building and professionalising HR for MotoVantage. We gained trust from business, including the leadership team. We also gave hope to staff members for growth opportunities and career development.”

Mpho says that he is taking great experience and exposure gained – both operational and strategic – into his new role.

“I have also developed some great leadership capabilities and must say have become one of the greatest leaders. I have learned to treat people with respect no matter their occupation level. My current role also taught me to be present and to ensure that as HR we play our role in contributing to both the organisational bottom line as well as its strategy.”

Mpho shares some advice for people who want to be successful in life: “Success takes time, and with focus, dedication and hard work, it is possible. It is also very critical to have a coach or a mentor to guide you in your career path. Associate yourself with winners in order to become a winner.
