Incoming HR head at Kukhanya Energy Services Nokukhanya Mkhize plans to illuminate lives through HR leadership.

To Nokukhanya Mkhize, her name is more than just a name that means ‘mother of light’ in isiZulu. She feels it’s rather prophetic about where she finds herself in her career.

“I got into HR to make a notable and visible difference in people’s lives. As the newly appointed HR officer at Kukhanya Energy Services, I am enthusiastic about contributing to a company that transcends business as usual.

“Kukhanya Energy Services specialises in supplying solar systems to rural areas, illuminating lives where grid electricity is absent. This speaks volumes to my values in being a change agent. I find joy in the company’s commitment to community development projects, marking a meaningful way to give back and uplift the underprivileged,” she says.

“‘HR for Good’ resonates deeply with me. I believe as HR leaders we need to commit to ethical business practices and eliminate workplace toxicity. In this role, I am to balance the needs of the business with the wellbeing of employees.”

With a multifaceted background spanning diverse industries, Nokukhanya’s journey is a testament to the transformative power of dedication and ethical leadership.

“I would describe my career journey as a purpose-driven one. Having traversed diverse industries, including consultancy, manufacturing, automation, telecommunications, and petroleum, I believe I will bring a wealth of experience to my current role.”

As a young female leader, Nokukhanya says she is a multifaceted individual, seamlessly balancing the roles of a devoted mother, passionate advocate for positive impact and a professional.

“I would say I subscribe to a servant leadership style, prioritising the needs, growth and personal development of team members. This approach also underscores my commitment to fostering a positive and collaborative work environment.”

Her heart and inspiration lie in her family, a tenacious work ethic, and an ambitious drive, and Nokukhanya aims to grow further in her personal and professional life.

“I am currently pursuing a postgraduate diploma in human resources at Durban University of Technology and looking forward to shifting my career further towards purpose-driven work, aligning my professional endeavours with my passion for community development,” she says.
