Absa appoints Phumelele Zwane as head of Ethics

The seasoned risk and compliance professional is returning to financial services.

Phumelele Zwane has been appointed as the group head of ethics at Absa.

She previously held the role of group ethics manager at Transaction Capital. This was after spending almost six years at the Airports Company of South Africa, starting as the operational governance manager before taking on the position of group manager: compliance and ethics.

Prior to that, Phumelele was the risk manager at the National Health Laboratory Service (NHLS), embedding strong knowledge and experience in corporate governance with detailed knowledge of risk related sections of King III and the Public Finance Management Act.

Additional roles in the risk discipline include chief risk officer at Komatiland Forests and middle manager risk at Eskom.

She started her career at FirstRand, first as an auditor, before taking on the role of operational risk manager.

Phumelele holds a BCom from the University of the Witwatersrand and an MBA from Unisa.
