Graeme Codrington explained what individuals and organisations need to do to prepare for future longevity.
On 28 February, a selection of South Africa’s leading CHROs gathered at Marble restaurant in Rosebank, Johannesburg to consider the future of work and the disruptive forces that are shaping it.
Globally renowned author, presenter and researcher Graeme Codrington from TomorrowToday Global shared his insights on how to prepare for the future, based on his experience working with CEOs and presenting in over 20 countries. He led the HR executives in a thought-provoking discussion that culminated in the conclusion that our generation will live to well beyond 130 so technology needs to be embraced and not feared. This outlook will support us in our quest to remain relevant players in the 4th industrial revolution.
Leading CHROs from Alexander Forbes, Discovery, Edcon, ENS Africa, Nestle and Old Mutual discussed several of the positive and negative implications.
Graeme highlighted three major changes which we should all prepare for:
- Medical advances and the fact that we will all live well beyond 130.
- Quantum computing and the effect this is going to have on every industry and job with the involvement in AI, robotics and machine learning.
- Renewable energy and the movement to a greener tomorrow.
The HR executives interrogated the topic and offered their opinions about what would be required of the “future employee” and the “future organisation” in order to be able to accommodate these changes.
“This was one of the most mind shifting and heated dinners I have attended. I really loved how passionate HR executives are about creating and sustaining an environment in which the future employee can thrive. Like with most things in life, if we view change positively and embrace it, the inevitable transitions and changes will be a lot smoother,” said John Deane, community manager.
