Juliet was involved in the merger between Momentum and Metropolitan Life to create MMI Holdings

Juliet Mhango, Group Human Resources Executive at Life Healthcare, has been an HR professional for more than 19 years. Before her current role she was the HR Executive at Momentum. She recounted some highlights of her time within MMI, one of which was her involvement during the time of the merger between Momentum and Metropolitan Life to create what is now MMI Holdings. The merger involved the integration of different HR practices, organisational cultures and alignment of leadership that could steer the new entity in the right direction.

On Monday, CHRO SA Executive Manager Didi Sehume met with Juliet, who said that what she is most passionate about within the HR space is, developing talent, building leadership capabilities, organisational cultural alignment and change management.

“One of the biggest challenges during a process of change is that people become very insecure about their jobs and you have to find a way of allaying their fears but steer the change in the required direction, aligning it to the needs of the organisation,” she says.

On the difference between the financial services and healthcare sectors, Juliet says the latter industry is currently undergoing some transformation. She highlighted that this was due to a changing landscape and industry challenges, like the pending National Health Insurance policy initiative that is being driven by the government.

“It’s important for organisations to look at the industry changes as opportunities.  The sector is also facing massive skills shortages in terms of nurses and doctors so we also have to navigate those challenges.  Skills shortages are a global issue that many healthcare providers around the world are struggling with.”
