HR Indaba 2018 Review: CHRO SA delivered on their promises, says Mirriam Magethi

Magethi Industrial Psychology Services may have signed up as a partner at the last minute but they were far from disappointed with the experience.

With over 3,000 attendees, close to 50 exhibitors, and numerous knowledge sharing sessions, the inaugural HR Indaba was arguably a resounding success. In this article, we will reflect on what was an amazing event and speak to Mirriam Magethi, MD of Magethi Industrial Psychology Services, about how she found the experience as an exhibitor.

What is Magethi Industrial Psychology Services?

"We provide services that range from any industrial industrial psychology theme that our clients are looking for. The most common requests are corporate assessments, which are used for recruitment, selection, career counselling and leadership development planning. We also do training and facilitation whereby we design theoretical material that is psychology based and is used to develop senior managers or juniors earmarked as high potential individuals. We also do organisational development where we come in and do a needs analysis of the entire organisation."

What makes your company different from other companies operating in the same space?

"What I think is a differentiating factor is that we always add a personal touch. For example, if we're administering an assessment for someone at directorship level, I would personally do the assessment and combine all the information that I've received to make a recommendation. I don't submit computer-generated reports as many others do."

A lot of the HR professionals already are industrial psychologists so why would a company approach you to provide a service that their in-house employees are qualified to offer?

"You find that some industrial psychologists tend to be designated to specific roles within HR. You can find someone, for example, who works only with rewards, recruitment or training and development. That limits their skills and experience to only working within a particular area. That is why companies would sometimes want to outsource someone with a broader set of skills and experience."

Why did you sign up for the HR Indaba and how was your experience as a partner for the event?

"We signed up because we thought it would be a great opportunity to get our name out there and I have to say I was not disappointed at all. Our daily work involves interacting with HR professionals and we have had a chance to engage with a lot of people here who have come by to ask about what we offer and given us feedback regarding the needs they have."

"I think the Indaba was extremely well organised because CHRO SA delivered on all the promises they made and, in my experience, everything ran pretty smoothly. We managed to get some good leads, which I'm hoping that they will translate into continued business."
